The Hakka people — 客家人 — are a distinct Han Chinese subgroup whose name means “guest people.” Over centuries of dynastic upheaval, their ancestors migrated southward from the Yellow River plains, carrying unique dialects, traditions, and an enduring collective identity.
Their diaspora spans Southeast Asia, the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa, and beyond — over 80 million people across six continents.
IHRNC was founded to serve as a scholarly and community anchor for the Hakka diaspora in Canada and to connect researchers, families, and cultural organizations globally.
